3D Modelling and UV - Soda Can (learning from scratch)
I decided, due to my lack of knowledge on how to build a proper 3D model in Maya that could be UV'd properly, I would try to follow a Maya for beginners tutorial on YouTube to model a Soda Can.
The tutorial taught me how to model using 2D planes and then extruding to make them 3D after making them have the form of a reference image plane.
Unfortunately, while the tutorial i found was helpful for the most part and taught me a few good tricks, it ended up skipping steps and expected you to have more practice despite being a for beginners tutorial video.
Due to this, the complex tab on top was difficult to create by myself and instead of continuing i decided to skip that and focus on the next part of my learning as i felt with my current knowledge, although it may take time, it wasn't something completely impossible.
Useful tools I learnt:
Snapping movement point to a vert using D
Quad Draw
Proper use of extrude
Invert shortcut
Image Planes
Reverse Planes
UV
The UV starts off as a mess and needs to be redone.
The first way that this UV could be done was using a cylindrical UV on the Can and then using separate planar UV's on the top and bottom and unfolding to remove distortion.
However, there is another way this can be done which looks a lot cleaner.
First you create a planar UV of the whole object projecting from the Y axis and then use the 3D cut tool to create the borderlines of the UV shells, you then unfold to separate the UV's and have them less distorted.
Substance Painter
The next step was to export the Soda Can into Substance Painter and texture it.
Here I used a material base to give it that nice metal look and glow and then i used a new layer and a brush with plastic matte pink to create what looks like a label. Currently this is a low detail model and wouldn't be used in big budget films or in a interaction moment in a game. This may be used as a low poly background item in a game but would either need the tab added via Maya model or imprinted with a normal in Substance painter.
