In order to further develop my skills and try to create something like a game designer I thought it would be a good idea to look into character sheets, using references from some of my favourite games and anime to help me.

I started off by coming up with some ideas for the race of the character and the class/job the character has in this fantasy world:

Creating Characters

Hikari

This is a character i created for my GDD, and i have an art piece of her already for a starter.

Hikari is a young Sionnach (fox) with a rare birth trait of multiple tails. She is the Kamui of light, however she and her friends and family do not know of this. She's a rather shy girl due to how she was treated when growing up and learnt to depend on her close friends, perhaps even too much.

She has long, flowing, polar white hair, and amethyst eyes. She uses light magic due to her innate ability to use it and wears a shrine maiden attire that was custom made just for her, however she isnt a shrine maiden class due to not being able to use healing magic effectively, but she does have some weaker healing abilities. She falls under Astral Sorcerer due to her damage-dealing light spells.

This is just the piece I did for my GDD logo and doesn't depict what she will look like on the character sheet.

Slime Character

This is an idea i'm very interested in. In the media i've watched and played, slime characters are able to take humanoid form and walk around as if they are a normal human, like Rimuru, or have a appearance that is humanoid but has a slight transparency to them and slimy appearance, like Suu.

In addition, slime characters in a fantasy setting are able to consume almost anything and use it to learn and develop, allowing them to change form and learn the skills of the things they consume and also make their own items and skills. In this case a slime character would need to have at least a slime form and a humanoid form be designed on their character sheet.

Slimes are mostly portrayed as blue, examples include dragon quest, atelier, reincarnated as a slime, etc. However, this character doesnt necessarily have to be blue, in fact they could be established as a type of slime amongest many others and have them share a trait that is only found in that type of slime, for example all have purple hair or all have green eyes.

The best way to start is to create the world for these creatures. These slimes could have grown in a way that caused them to be attuned to their habitat, causing the difference in traits. Water, Wind, Fire, Earth, Ice and lighting are typical elements and could be assigned to different areas that slimes are found. For example, a very windy plains could have wind aspected slimes while a snowy tundra would have ice aspected slimes.

For each of these elements there is a set colour that can be assigned to them:

Red = Fire
Brown = Earth

Blue = Water

Light Blue = Ice

Purple = Lightning

Green = Wind

Then the slimes can be the colour of their element, and when transformed into other forms will keep that colour in certain traits that may vary based on the slime and form.

When in slime form the slime would need some way to communicate to others, this is something that is done in Reincarted as a Slime and it allows Rimuru to convey emotions not only to the other characters but also to the audeience as the animators can't use human features like eyes and eyebrows to convey emotions of the character.

I'm going to try and come up with my own ways to represent emotions for the slime form while taking reference from these. Another slime form I like is Suu's from Monster Musume. She has a little Tendril on top of her head that is carried over in her humanoid form where she has 2 of them. This sould be another way to differntiate the slime types instead of just colour.

Character Sheets and World Development

Having planned out some small starts to the characters, I want to begin to draw up some ideas and edit them over time.

Slime Form

I want to draw all the types of slime and then choose one to carry on into the humanoid form and give a role and character to.

These are the basic designs i've created for the different elements of slime. They would be edited and more refined over time to fit the area the belong to, but for a basis i think they are good.

Next i want to focus on building a world, looking closely at the slimes and then the character themself.

The World

Slimes are common in the world. However, slimes are typically low-level monsters that are easy to kill and lack any sense of self let alone speak. Slimes can be created by mages and given minds and orders; however, a slime is not known to be able to do anything without having a mage create them.

Slimes vary based on the area they come from. There are different types of slimes that are created due to the different elements of the world. Slimes have many weaknesses that will change based on their core element, however their main weakness is that they need to make sure they have a constant supply of their core elements magic, or they will begin to become weak and die.

Fire:

Fire slimes are typically found in caves and hot areas where you would find lava and magma. If a fire slime comes into contact with water they will harden and be vulnerable, therefore they tend to stay away from said places and never leave their hot climates where the element of fire is abundant. Fire slimes can be used to heat houses instead of fire.

Water:

Water slimes are found in rivers and other bodies of water. Due to a slimes lack of lungs, they are not able to float on water and instead have adapted to be able to swim in the water and absorb water and release it to propel themselves around. If a water slime gets too hot or is away from water for a prolonged period they will die. Water slimes can be used as a substitute for water crystals in the creation of water features and other water-based construction due to the slime storing water inside itself

Earth:

Earth slimes are a mischievous lot. Due to them being made of the very common element earth, they were very easy prey to find and were hunted a lot. This caused earth slimes to adapt and be able to hide easily, taking the shape of trees, plants and rocks. Now they tend to stay away from humans directly and instead torment them from afar. The flowers grown on the mossy head of an earth slime are treasured by nobles due to how rare it has become to kill them now.

Wind:

Wind slimes are another easy to find slime. However, unlike their earth slime cousins, wind slimes have not adapted to the hunting of their kind and instead are still hunted as they were before. They tend to roam open plains and hills due to them being windy environments. When threated, wind slimes create an aura around them that blows away anything near it. This means projectiles have no effect on them when your presence is known. Their slime can be used to make weapons and clothes more agile and be used in the making of threads to make clothes softer.

Ice:

Ice slimes are found in cold caves, frozen mountain peaks and icy tundra, and appear when it gets cold in the winter. They have fragile icy wings that allow them to fly at low altitudes and grow ice crystals on their slimy surface. The ice crystals that grow from an ice slime are very valuable to blacksmiths and merchants due to the rarity of them, and they’re used to make special swords and other items that have an ice element to them, similar to if a weapon was imbued with ice magic. Ice slimes can also be used for the cooling of food and other means that require a cool environment.

Lightning/Plasma:

Plasma/lightning slimes are found in some caves and in areas when there is a storm. These slimes create their own electrical flow within their body and can release to affect things around them, leading to fires. Dwarves came up with the idea to use these slimes to power their creations and put them to use in their factories.

The slime is going to be an adventurer, so they need to have a story that allows them to gain friends to adventure with. The slime would have to come into contact with humans that are young and get along with them, so this means it would take place in a habitable environment, which means fire and plasma slimes wouldn’t be able to fit this character unfortunately.

The slime is going to be found by village children and taken in as their friend. Slowly the slime will begin to learn human emotions and become sentient and wish to be a human like the others, which will cause the magic inside them to them into a human.

The village will take them in, thinking its just a lost child, but will realise shortly after the truth but will look after them as they feel the slime is harmless and keep them as they are a friendly village.

The slimes body recreates the prosses of growth and causes the slime to grow like a regular human. The slime was like a complete new-born when it was taken in. It was not completely in control of its body and emotions so was looked after by the children it was originally with, as well as the parents of the girl who originally found the slime as they take them in as their child .

The slime grew dependent on its friends and developed a rather shy and timid personality because of this and the fear of people discovering the truth of its origins and not liking it. The slime wants to try and look after slimes, taking them under their care and protecting them from being hunted, which the slimes friends help them do.

Character:

Personality: Shy, timid, cares for their friends, will jump to their friends’ aid

Slime form: Wind Slime

Class: Dancer, uses chakrams to attack enemies. The slimes wind element helps them be agile.

Hair: Green

Eyes: Red

Body: Pale skin with small wings on their back and tendrils that can come from their body

Outfit: wears agile clothing that allows them to move with ease

Gender: all though being labelled as a girl when they first entered the village, they decided for themselves later they felt more comfortable being non-binary, and letting people use pronouns she, her, they and them.

Now I need to examine my character sheet references and form a basis for what I need to include on mine and then plan how to lay it out before I start to concept the character.

Character Sheet

Now to draw the character sheet for my character, which should include:

  • Full body concept

  • Pose

  • Accessories

  • Slime form

  • Side angles

  • Outfit variations/close ups

  • Head and emotions

  • Slime form
