The elders of the city tell of a legend, one of a child who will be their salvation or undoing.

The player is able to choose between classes found in the world, while the party members you gather stick to their preferences.
Discovered through a situation, [UNPLANNED] it is revealed that the player can eat monsters to learn abilities from them, however this will have an adverse effect on the player...
If the player so chooses, after meeting a certain NPC, they can tame monsters instead of eating them and become a Tamer class.

You can set up an Atelier, Blacksmith, Traders, etc, for one of your party members who can make you items to use, or can buy them from stores, but eventually they'll pale in comparison to those made.
These specialized buildings allow you to have a party member train at them while you're in town, allowing them to become better in the arts and make crafting possible when out and about...
